Creating a healthy, happy workplace

Reward your employees with a healthy work life balance, says Jonathan Walsh, managing director of Warrington-based MEPC Birchwood Park.

Work and life, are they really that hard to balance? Findings released from Simplyhealth and Samaritans* says that 42% of people felt the right work life balance helped them to feel good at work. Is achieving this balance as simple as it might sound?

At Birchwood Park, we believe that creating a healthy balance includes everything from flexi-time to the facilities on offer. A few of these elements combined can help to make employees happier and healthier and motivate them to achieve greater business success.

We pride ourselves on the facilities we offer occupiers, from our on-site gym to restaurant, weekly movie night and allotments. We have more than 150 companies and over 5,000 people working at Birchwood Park and providing the best possible environment to aid business development is at the heart of what we do on a daily basis.

I can’t overstate the importance of taking take time out in the day. Healthy and happy employees see better results, which all contributes to having that important work life balance. We want to support all of the companies on the park by providing them with the facilities to ensure all members of their team feel motivated.

We have always believed that employees who have the room to be able to get away from their desks and take time out are happier. People can enjoy a lunchtime walk, cycle around the park using one of our free bikes or meet with colleagues at our restaurant for lunch. Having a variety of facilities enables employees to spend quality time away from their desks and enhances well-being and productivity.

We are actively looking to change the perception that work is about driving into a car park, sitting at your desk, eating your lunch at your desk, getting back in your car and going home. Our healthy work ethos and the facilities on offer ensure people have the opportunity to enhance their working day at every opportunity.

Samaritans and Simplyhealth raise some important points that all employers should be aware of. The health and happiness of employees can never be taken for granted; it’s something that needs to be on the agenda for all businesses in 2013.
